Boreal forests ring the Arctic Circle. If you are surrounded by spruce, aspen and birch trees, then check your map; maybe you are closer to the North Pole than you think. These are birch and aspen barren of their leaves and sheltering the southern slopes of the White Mountains. The long shadows from the sun create the etched look.
